I’ve had an unusual path to becoming a writer.
For 45 years, I worked as an engineer in industries as varied as sandpaper, air traffic control, the intelligence community, disk drives, human relations, legal reference, satellite scheduling, elemental phosphorus, and college registration. I was also an Air Force officer for four years. Each job introduced me to new people, new problems, and new ways of thinking.
All the while, I was writing.
Thirty years ago, I wrote my first novel, and then another, and another. I’ve written mysteries, romance, and comedy for children, young adults, and adults, continually expanding my skills and exploring different kinds of stories. Eventually, I moved into screenwriting, writing across genres and formats and discovering new ways to tell a story.
I also wrote a nonfiction book about how my siblings and I chose very different careers, bringing together two things I’ve always enjoyed: asking questions and figuring out how people make their way through life.
Whether I’m writing fiction, screenplays, or nonfiction, I’m curious. I like learning, exploring unfamiliar territory, and finding interesting ways to put what I’ve learned to work.
After a lifetime of doing that in engineering and writing, I’m still curious about what comes next.
